Lands End to John O'Groats - The Challenge 24th April - 6th May 2011

Approximately 1020 miles, from one end of the country to the other... three runners... each running a minimum of a marathon per day. 39 Marathons in 13 days.

Early morning, Sunday April 24th 2011: Three runners will gather at Land’s End.  One will start running, handing over a virtual baton to the next relay runner some 26 miles later.  By the end of the day, nearly 80 miles will have been run between them.

Early evening, Friday 6th May 2011:  John O’Groats.  EACH runner will have run 13 marathons in 13 days.  The pub had better be open.

At least, that’s the plan.  We are Kelvin Dickinson, Caz Hall and Mark Dodd.  We run marathons.  But we honestly don’t know if we can do this.  And that’s part of the attraction.  Another part is seizing a wonderful opportunity to raise funds for causes we care about.  Mark is raising money for the Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool.  Kelvin and Caz are raising money for the Wirral Autistic Society. Please see our donations page.

Why are we doing this and how did it come about?

Well, like we've said, we run... short stuff like 5k's and also in the case of Kelvin and Caz copious amount of Ultra running. However, like anything else you become weary and need something to take you to "the next level"... what is there? Well, maybe lets run from one end of the country to the other as a relay? Mark was the origin of the idea... and thought he'd ask Kelvin who he knew could manage the mileage and do it as a duo. However, this would take a considerable amount of time off work PLUS a considerable toll on the body, so it was decided to enrol a third member to the team in the form of Kelvins partner Caz. Having done marathons and ultra running anyway, she was the perfect choice. And so the idea was born... plus it gave the option of also raising money for two charities close to their hearts.

Background to Lands End to John O'Groats

John O'Groats is 874 miles from lands end. This is the greatest distance between any two points in Britain. A mound and a flag staff near John O'Groats hotel marks the site where John De Groot, a Dutchman, built his famous house in the reign of James IV (1488 to 1513). His seven descendants quarreled about precedence and De Groot solved the problem by building an octagonal house with eight doors (one for each of the seven and himself) and eight-sided table so that no-one occupied the important position at the head of the table. John De Groot, ran a ferry to Orkney and charged 4d, a trip. The little coin of this denomination subsequently became known as a Groat. John De Groot was Buried in Canisbay church yard, three miles from John O'Groats, and his tombstone can still be seen there. This is the church in which the queen mother worships when on holiday at her northern home, the castle of Mey.

This intriguing sign at Windamere, Westmorland, marks the middle of the road between Land's End and John O'Groats - it's only 434 miles either way.
